Clinical Case
Patient: Amelia
Species: Feline
Breed: American Shorthair
Sex: Female
Age: 2 years
Attending Veterinarian: DVM Carla Muñoz
Reason for consultation
The patient presented for consultation due to excessive pruritus and wounds on the caudal aspect of both ears.
Physical examination
During the physical examination, physiological parameters were observed within normal ranges. No apparent changes in lymph nodes or abdominal palpation. T: 38.4 ºC, HR: 142 bpm, RR: 32 rpm, Weight: 4.1 Kg.
Skin: Wounds of approx. 6 cm were found on the caudal aspect of both ears with abundant cerumen-like debris in both ear canals. Due to the patient experiencing acute pain when handling the ears, sedation was performed to carry out a deep cleaning of both ears and the wounds found.
Upon performing ear prophylaxis, an exudate sample was taken for microscopic evaluation via cytology to rule out yeast and parasites. The test revealed the presence of ear mites.
Definitive diagnosis
- Otodectes cynotis
Treatment
Deep prophylaxis of both internal ear canals, shaving, and cleaning of external wounds under anesthesia. Administration of Bravecto PLUS and Otomite drops.
Progress
The patient progressed satisfactorily to the treatment one week after the consultation; external wounds appeared significantly reduced, and the owners commented that she no longer attempts to scratch. At the 15-day check-up, the patient no longer presented any type of exudate or visible external wounds.
